Erl Hubert Ellis was born in Garden City, Kan. in 1888. His family moved to Denver, Colo. where Ellis attended East High School. He received a law degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo. in 1912 and was a partner in the law firm, Grant, Ellis, Shafroth and Toll law firm in Denver, Colo. During World War II, Ellis worked as an office manager during the construction of the 10th Mountain Division's training base at Camp Hale, Colo. Later, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
